Yes You Can, But Are You?

It was 6 in the evening. I was out in the park for my usual evening jogging routine. My routine: 25 rounds of a rectangular park followed by stretching exercises, for a total of an hour in the evening. I explained the jog and what I learnt from that in my previous post Jog in the Park.

One evening, I was doing my regular routine jog. In the park a certain group of kids used to play football. It was a daily encounter. I used to see them every day they used to see me every day. It was a group of 10 odd boys all in school, somewhere in their 9th or 10th standard.

As is usual in a group of boys, some are humble live-and-let-live kinds while some others are bossy you-follow-me-I’m-the-boss kind. There was one boy in particular, a bit plump that belonged to the second category. He took real pride in telling others what to do and what not to do on the game field.

On that particular evening, while I was taking my rounds, the plump boy was talking to another boy in the group. They were done with their game and were wrapping up and talking to one another. In that particular moment when I passed them, the plump boy asked his one of his healthier-looking friend,

“Tu is ground ke kitne rounds laga lega?” (How many rounds of this ground can you take?)

“25”, the friend replied after thinking a for a second.

It was not the question per se but the way he asked his friend the question, stopping the other conversation and asking at that very moment when I was passing, in a rather mocking way which was interesting. It felt as if trying to prove to me (I was already half way in my jog by then), that it’s no big deal that I’m taking all these rounds. That it’s possible for anyone to do this.

Of course, I ignored him. But then a though struck me, like the bolt of the lightning at that very moment.
The thought that came to my mind was:

It’s not whether you can but whether you are doing it that makes all the difference.

Of course anyone can take 25 rounds of the ground. Of course he himself could also do those many rounds. The question not that. The question is how many people actually are doing it?

All of us have the potential to do great things in life. Yes, I can start a business. Yes, I can go to the gym every day. I can learn how to cook. I can learn a new language. I can write a book. The question is not whether I can do it or not. The question is am I?

Think for a moment about your life. How many such resolves have you taken and broken thus far? I know I have done it many times.

The question is not whether you can do something. Because the answer to that is a resounding Yes. The question is, are you really doing it? Are you taking time out of your daily schedule to learn that new skill? To start that business? To go to the gym? Because that is what’s going to make all the difference in your life.

Once again, I would like to put stress on the fact that it’s not whether you can but whether you are doing it that makes all the difference.
